SEBASTICOOK VALLEY COMMUNITY CENTER TO CLOSE
PERMANENTLY
The Sebasticook Valley Community Center (SVCC) Board of Directors, staff and volunteers regret to inform the citizens of Newport and Sebasticook Valley that as of August 31, 2010, the entity that has run programs for all ages over the past 20 or so years will cease to operate. The non-profit corporation will continue to exist until all pending bills and commitments are satisfied, but all programs and services will cease.
On July 17, each board member received a letter from the building’s owner informing us that we are being asked to move out of the building effective September 1, because the building will be leased to the Town of Newport. In summary, the Town has ceased to provide the funding approved by tax payers, have reprioritized where the money will be spent, and expended portions of those funds on projects in town. That action, together with being asked to vacate the building result in the undeniable fact that the center as it has operated for years can’t continue to fund and house its programs. As of September 1, any and all communications regarding recreation or community activities formerly directed or assisted by the community center should be directed to the Town of Newport staff or your selectmen. We understand that the Board of Selectmen intends to continue to support youth sports programs, but from our conversations other programs may not be continued.
The Board can in no way begin to thank all of the participants and volunteers for their years of excitement and service at the center. We hope that those supporting the town’s efforts to take over youth sports are no less committed. Between now and August 31, the center will not be open for regular business, but will be busy removing the organization’s belongings.
